Anyone try WSPR?

5w can be heard quite a ways away. Running WSPR overnight yielded these contacts. My station is in western New York State and the antenna is a Chameleon Emcomm II.

Has anyone else tried WSPR?

What is WSPR? Can you explain it? It does appear to cover a lot of territory.

WSPR, pronounced whisper, stands for Weak Signal Propagation Reporter. It's a digital mode that comes with WSJT-X software (it's free and runs on Windows, Linux and Mac). It transmits on a really narrow signal - about 6KHz - and sends a small amount of data: your call sign, location, and wattage - and it takes two minutes to transmit just that small amount of data. But using only 5 watts, you can be heard all over the world. You can transmit on higher power, but the whole point of it is to use a weak signal.

WSJT-X listens for other signals and reports them via the internet. https://www.wsprnet.org/drupal/wsprnet/map lets you view who is hearing or is heard by whom.

That sounds like fun. I'll have to look into it more to see if I have enough stuff here to give it a try one weekend.
